16 Aug Following Social (Media) Butterfly Kalli Pezel
Meet the social media manager working behind the scenes to get the word (and photos) out about Iron Mountain Hot Springs and Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, two of Glenwood Springs’ premier visitor attractions.
Like a butterfly, Kalli Pezel rarely stays in place long. Her work at both Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park and Iron Mountain Hot Springs keeps her flitting between the two as she curates content for social platforms for both properties.
At Home Online and in the Mountains
“Social media marketing is changing every day it seems,” she said. “There is always something new and different happening for the social platforms of both properties and staying on top of it all is a full-time job.” Pezel began her career working for Steve and Jeanne Beckley, owners of both properties, in 2017. “My husband and I were living out of state to expand our horizons and explore the world, but when we found out we were pregnant with our daughter we knew we wanted to move back to Colorado.” Being closer to family was a top priority for the couple but living in the big city where most of their relations resided was not. Pezel and her husband Chris landed in Glenwood Springs. After that, it wasn’t long before Kalli secured the social media marketing gig for Iron Mountain Hot Springs at the time.
Whether in Words or Images Storytelling is Key
“I love my job,” Pezel said. “Now that my office is located on the mountain, I treasure those days when I could look out my window and see how neat the Iron Mountain Hot Springs experience is as compared to anywhere else—you’re in a mineral pool, next to a river, in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, and sipping a cocktail if you want!”
Pezel’s knack for communicating experiences helps her build a loyal following across multiple social media channels. For Iron Mountain Hot Springs that includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, and for Glenwood Caverns an additional two—Pinterest and most recently Tik Tok.
Over the years, Pezel’s job has seen a lot of changes. “Mostly I am staying connected and engaged with our fans and keeping up with trends, but increasingly I’m taking more photos and videos,” she said. In fact, if you happen to catch a recent clip of Glenwood Caverns’ thrill rides, chances are good that it was Pezel who shot it with her GoPro camera.
Another trend that is keeping her busy is building relationships and connecting with social media influencers—individuals who have built a trusted relationship with their followers in a particular online market niche like travel. “The power of social media is incredible. More than anything, people want to see others having an organic, not a staged, experience. When we invite influencers to come to the hot springs or park, it’s a win-win. They’re giving their audiences an inside look at what it’s really like to spend a day with us.”
Always Looking Ahead
What’s Pezel looking forward to next? “The new hot springs expansion is going to be a big step up for Iron Mountain Hot Springs and our visitors. Many of our guests have been asking for an ‘adults only’ area for a long time, and we’re going to be able to give them that area while families also have a place of their own to enjoy soaking.” Iron Mountain Hot Springs will be opening 10 new hot springs pools, along with other amenities, in 2022.
